Le Gloria de Vivaldi a une signification particulière pour Carus puisqu’il s’agissait de la première publication éditée par Günter Graulich pour le Carus-Verlag en 1972 – et donc le prélude à la création de la maison d’édition. Notamment grâce à l’édition Carus et à l’enregistrement pour le label Carus, le Gloria est devenu depuis une des œuvres chorales les plus populaires de Vivaldi.
Les éditions anciennes sont systématiquement remaniées chez Carus et les partitions et textes de l’édition Carus n° 1 ont donc aussi subi une révision approfondie. Le graphisme modernisé est complété par un avant-propos et un rapport critique selon l’état actuel de la recherche.
Le Gloria a probablement été écrit entre 1713 et 1717 pour l’Ospedale della Pietà, un des orphelinats de Venise où les jeunes filles recevaient une éducation musicale intensive. Cette œuvre représentative à la manière de ce qu’on appelle « messe-cantate » se compose de 12 parties qui se différencient dans leur effectif, style, tonalité et l’émotion exprimée. Le talent de Vivaldi ressort à la fois dans les parties chorales solennelles et éclatantes et dans les solos plutôt conçus comme de la musique de chambre.
Les modifications pour les parties du chœur sont minimes, la nouvelle édition peut donc sans problème être associée à l’ancien conducteur.

Translation (abridged): John CoombsThe Gloria in D major has, more than any other work, established Vivaldi’s reputation as a composer of church music. In the compositional design of this work Vivaldi followed the same basic conception which is known from Bach’s B minor Mass: it is arranged in a large number of individual movements, some of which are for chorus, while others are solo arias or duets. This is the basis of the socalled “cantata” or “number” Mass, which enabled the composer to focus on central thoughts of the text. Thus the twelve movements profit from a great diversity of character, while at the same spanning a considerable stylistic range.

Die Wiederbelebung der Musik Antonio Vivaldis im 20. Jahrhundert ging einher mit der Neuentdeckung bisher völlig unbekannter Schaffensbereiche des Komponisten. Für die stärksten Überraschungen sorgte dabei ein großer Bestand an geistlicher Vokalmusik, dessen Repertoire von der groß angelegten Mess- und Vesperkomposition bis zum biblischen Oratorium und zur Solomotette reicht. Die ersten Wiederaufführungen solcher Werke, darunter das Gloria RV 589 und das Credo RV 591, während einer Vivaldi-Woche in Siena 1939 wurden geradezu als Sensation empfunden. Sie ließen deutlich werden, dass der Komponist gerade auf diesem Sektor Werke höchsten künstlerischen Ranges geschaffen hat.
Wie kaum ein zweites Werk hat das Gloria D-Dur RV 589 dazu beigetragen, den Ruf Vivaldis als Kirchenkomponist zu begründen. Seit es 1941 als erstes der kirchenmusikalischen Werke des Komponisten durch Druck veröffentlicht wurde, erfreut es sich der besonderen Gunst der Musizierenden und der Hörer. Die Gründe dafür mögen vielfältiger Natur sein, liegen aber gewiss primär bei der Kraft und dem Reichtum der musikalischen Erfindung und Ausdrucksgebung.

En 1972, il fonda avec son épouse Waltraud les Editions Carus-Verlag, qu'il fit évoluer d'un bureau de 2 personnes à une entreprise de près de 60 employés. Lui-même cantor pendant de longues années à l'église St Matthieu de Stuttgart, il dirigea pendant plus de 50 ans le Motettenchor Stuttgart.
