Translation: Ulrich Leisinger, John Coombs“A sacred oratorio [... ] is nothing other than a poem intended to be set to music which presents a certain sacred action or virtue in a dramatic manner.” These words are found in issue 20 of the Critischer Musikus, a weekly magazine about music, by which, between 1737 and 1740, Johann Adolph Scheibe, a student and sometimes rebellious critic of Johann Sebastian Bach, intended to introduce a wider audience to the music of his time. According to Scheibe, “the arrangement of the words consists of biblical sayings, arias, cavatas, recitatives, chorales, or short excerpts from psalms and songs of praise.” Oratorios can be either dramatic, if they include personages, which may be taken either from the bible or be freely invented, with regard to poetic considerations; but at the same time they can also be “poetic and prosaic”, namely when the text is based on the narrative accounts of the Evangelist from the Bible, for example in the Passion or the Resurrection histories. One could object, says Scheibe, that such an oratorio shows a certain tendency towards the epic, “but since the Evangelist, who in

Translation (abridged): J. Bradford Robinson, David KosvinerThe idea of an autonomous work of art that has governed discussions of art ever since the nineteenth century was alien to Johann Sebastian Bach and his contemporaries. Almost all of Bach’s compositions were written for external occasions, whether in fulfillment of his duties as concert- and chapel-master or to meet the needs of his lessons. Remarkably, however, he returned to some of his works again and again over long periods of time. Some of the alterations he made went far beyond what was necessary for a simple revival, suggesting that he was intent on putting these works into a “definitive”shape.
The circumstances surrounding the Mass in B minor BWV 232, to use the name we give it today (Carl Philipp Emanuel Bach called it “the great Catholic Mass” to distinguish it from his father’s Kyrie-Gloria Masses, BWV 233–236), are especially complex. Its genesis was spread over a period of more than fifteen years, and the work, though finished at the time of Bach’s death (on 28 July 1750), still awaited a final revision to put it into performable condition. Despite

Juli 1750 zwar

Translation (abridged): Elizabeth RobinsonJohann Sebastian Bach’s four Lutheran Masses (BWV 233-236) were composed towards the end of the 1730s and are so-called because they comprise just Kyrie and Gloria, as was customary in Protestant practice of the time. They are almost entirely parodies of cantata movements. With the Mass in G minor, Bach appears to have started with a plan to make full use of his cantata Es wartet alles auf dich (BWV 187) of 1726. Here, he used all the movements which were suitable for parody treatment in the mass. The opening chorus “Es wartet alles auf dich” became the final chorus with the text “Cum Sancto Spiritu in gloria Dei Patris. Amen”. The three solo arias in the cantata recur in the mass as inner movements (3–5) in the Gloria section. For the Kyrie and the opening movement of the Gloria, Bach needed two further choral pieces, and for these he drew on the opening choruses of cantatas BWV 102 and BWV 72, also written in 1726.
It goes almost without saying that Bach’s reworking is not limited to the underlay of the new text and associated modifications of the vocal parts. In two cases, in

Translation (abridged): John CoombsThe “Magnificat” – the song of praise of the Virgin Mary on hearing that she is to become the mother of Christ – has formed the climactic point of the service of Vespers in the liturgy of the Catholic Church since the 6th century. Following the Reformation Vespers, including the Magnificat, retained a place in the Protestant liturgy.
Johann Sebastian Bach’s Latin Magnificat exists in two versions. The first, in E flat major, was written in 1723, the year when he took up his position in Leipzig, and was intended for use in the Christmas Vespers. In view of that intention four Christmas pieces were added to this version, and instead of flutes Bach used recorders, with their pastoral character. A few years later Bach revised the work. He transposed it to D major, removed the Christmas pieces, and replaced the recorders by flutes, whose

Bach’s “great Passion”
Translation (abridged): David KosvinerMany aspects relating to the genesis of the St. Matthew Passion are still unresolved. Only one performance can be documented with certainty: it took place during the Good Friday Vespers in 1736. There was, most probably, a further performance in 1742. There is substantial evidence in support of two preceding performances (in 1729 and 1727), but we cannot be absolutely certain. It is probable that the events leading up to the Passion go back even further than we already supposed: Perhaps already in 1726 Bach intended to compose a work before he decided (apparently too late) to re-perform the St. Mark Passion that has been mistakenly attributed to Reinhard Keiser. Also, in the previous year (1725), there was an attempt to write a Passion composition which came to naught, probably due to the withdrawal of the librettist. (Had Bach at that time already planned to compose a Passion according to the Evangelist Matthew?) Apparently he decided at short notice to perform his St. John Passion again, which had been performed in 1724, but with far-reaching changes to the

Complete even though Uncompleted – Bach’s St. John Passion and its Dramatic History of Origin
Translation: Gudrun and David KosvinerWhen the court Kapellmeister Johann Sebastian Bach from Köthen took up his post as music director and Kantor of St. Thomas’s School in the early summer of 1723, the weekly performance and composition of cantatas for church services on Sundays and feast days became the focus of his artistic work. In addition, he was obliged every year to deliver a musical rendition of one of the four biblical passion narratives for the vespers service on Good Friday. The latter was undoubtedly the greatest challenge for the Kantor, as the length of a passion composition exceeds that of a cantata many times over. But because there was a strict ban on music-making during the six weeks of Lent in Leipzig, Bach had comparatively much preparation time at his disposal. And so he was able to put his own personal stamp on the event already for his first Good Friday vespers on 7 April 1724. However, he had to demonstrate sensitivity. The practice of figural passion music, which had also become customary in Leipzig since 1721, was (still) controversial.

O man, thy grievous sins bemoan,
2a. Recitativo
thy Saviour left his Father's throne
and came to earth to end them.
His mother was the virgin fair.
He came the sins of man to bear;
from judgement to defend them.
He banished illness, grief and pain,
dead he brought to life again,
and when his time was ended,
he shed his precious blood for us,
in sacrifice miraculous,
upon the cross suspended.Evangelista
2b. Chorus
Jesus went with his disciples over the brook Cedron, where was a garden, to which came Jesus and his disciples. Judas also he who was false knew the place full well, for Jesus resorted thither oft to be with his disciples. Judas therefore, who had gathered a body of men, whom the Chief Priests and the Pharisees had sent him, now cometh thither with lanterns, torches and with weapons. Therefore Jesus knowing all things, that were to come upon him,
went straightway forth and said unto them:
Jesus
Whom seek ye here?

And also there went up Joseph from Galilee up out of Nazareth, to the city of David, in Judea, which is called Bethlehem, for Joseph was of the house and of the lineage of David; that there might be enrolled for tax with Mary, Mary, his wedded wife, being great with child. Translation: Erik DorsetWhat would Christmas be without music? The angles in the Bible do not merely speak the divine message of peace; they sing “Gloria in Excelsis Deo.” Songs such as O du fröhliche (O, how joyful) or Vom Himmel hoch, da komm ich her (From Heaven above to Earth I come) are simply part of the Christmas holiday season. But the epitome of Christmas music is Bach’s Christmas Oratorio, which opens with a drum roll. Tönet, ihr Pauken! (Sound, you drums!) was the title of the cantata that paid homage to the Saxon Electress and Polish Queen Maria Josepha, the music of which Bach reworked to make one of the most successful pieces of Christmas music of all time. And maybe even the composer suspected that although that very Queen would disappear silently and wordlessly, Christmas, as a multifaceted subject for which the Bach invented great music, was to stay.
Let us now move over to the Advent season in 1734 in Leipzig. On the first Sunday of Advent, the Thomaskantor performed Telemann’s cantata Machet die Tore weit (Lift up your heads, you gates) in the main worship service. From the second to the

Was wäre Weihnachten ohne Musik?

Translation: Ulrich Leisinger, John Coombs“A sacred oratorio [... ] is nothing other than a poem intended to be set to music which presents a certain sacred action or virtue in a dramatic manner.” These words are found in issue 20 of the Critischer Musikus, a weekly magazine about music, by which, between 1737 and 1740, Johann Adolph Scheibe, a student and sometimes rebellious critic of Johann Sebastian Bach, intended to introduce a wider audience to the music of his time. According to Scheibe, “the arrangement of the words consists of biblical sayings, arias, cavatas, recitatives, chorales, or short excerpts from psalms and songs of praise.” Oratorios can be either dramatic, if they include personages, which may be taken either from the bible or be freely invented, with regard to poetic considerations; but at the same time they can also be “poetic and prosaic”, namely
