Johannes Meister

Personal details

Johannes Meister received his artistic training at the universities of music in Cologne and Vienna. After graduating in orchestral conducting, he attended masterclasses with Helmuth Rilling, Eric Ericson, Gerd Albrecht and Leonard Bernstein. His first engagement took him to Switzerland in 1987, where he was engaged as choir director at the Lucerne Theatre. He then began his regular work as a guest conductor with German radio choirs. From 1994 to 1998, Johannes Meister was appointed choir director at the Vienna State Opera. During this time, he conducted numerous performances with the Vienna State Opera Chorus and was responsible for premieres and concerts under the direction of Claudio Abbado, Carlo Maria Giulini, Zubin Mehta, Riccardo Muti and Marcello Viotti, among others. Since his return to Switzerland in 1998, he has conducted various Zug concert choirs and was the main lecturer in the CH I/ II choral conducting training programme. In addition to conducting the Zug Chamber Choir, Johannes Meister is also Vice President of the Swiss Federation Europa Cantat and acts as chief expert and juror for the Swiss Choral Association.
