Works for mixed choir a cappella
Repertoire of romantic choral music worth discovering: In his unaccompanied choral songs the expressive melodies of the song composer Schumann combine with a harmonically rich, sometimes even experimental composition. Though in current concert repertoire they are far less often performed than, for example, comparable works by Mendelssohn or Brahms, they are unjustly underestimated. Schumann himself wrote that he had composed the choral songs "with true passion", in the belief "that things like this did not yet exist". Schumann composed most of the choral songs, which are mainly homophonic, in 1849 for the "Verein für Chorgesang" founded by him and the Leipzig Liederkranz.
The volume brings together choral settings which where previously only available by Carus in separate editions, plus the choral song Glockentürmers Töchterlein which only exists in manuscript.

Robert Schumann
| 1810-1856Robert Schumann ist noch immer vor allem als Klavier- und Liedkomponist bzw. als Symphoniker präsent. In seinen späteren Schaffensjahren sah er hingegen in der Komposition von Chormusik einen wichtigen Schwerpunkt seiner Arbeit. Hier gilt es auch heute noch einen weitgehend unbekannten Schumann zu entdecken, dessen Chormusik Volkstümlichkeit und künstlerischen Anspruch zugleich meisterhaft verbindet. Carus bietet Schumanns sämtliche Werke für gemischten Chor und für Frauenchor a cappella und mit Klavier. Sie zeigen seine Experimentierfreude, seine Sensibilität in der Auswahl sowie musikalischen Umsetzung der Texte, nicht zuletzt aber sein eigenständiger Chorstil, der besonders auf raffinierte Details in der Gestaltung des Satzes setzt. | 1926The publisher, church musician and teacher Günter Graulich is one of the major personalities in German publishing of the post-war period. With his wife Waltraud he founded Carus-Verlag Stuttgart in 1972, which he built up from a 2-person family firm to a medium-sized business with around 60 employees. A trained church musician and Kantor for many years at the Matthäuskirche Stuttgart, he also directed the Motettenchor Stuttgart for 50 years. ... Eine Fundgrube für Leiter weltlicher Chöre, da sie auch gut liegen und ähnlich wie die Klavierzyklen Schumanns bezaubernde Kleinodien darstellen. Die doppelchörigen Gesänge op. 141 sind allerdings durchaus anspruchsvoll zu singen. (gd)
