Reger-Werkausgabe, Vol. I/6: Organ pieces II
The sixth
volume in the series of organ works includes, in chronological order, the organ
pieces Max Reger composed in between April 1902 and spring 1903 in Munich. The works presented in Vols. I/5-7 are, except for the
works without opus numbers, collections of character pieces, not composed as
cycles, but nevertheless arranged systematically. They mainly combine Reger’s
compositions of medium difficulty, written both as a response to his
large-scale works, but also with an eye to the market for printed music.
Since January 2008, the first scholarly, critical edition of the works of Max Reger (RWA) is being produced at the Max-Reger-Institute, Karlsruhe. Its design as a “hybrid” edition breaks new ground in the methods of editorial practice. It comprises three areas of Reger's compositional output: Organ works, Lieder and choruses and, for the first time, Max Reger's arrangements of works by other composers. To begin the series, the first seven volumes have been published and contain the organ works, which have been eagerly awaited by many.

| 1873-1916Born in Brand, Bavaria, in 1873, Reger studied music in Munich and Wiesbaden with Hugo Riemann. From 1905 on he worked at the Academy in Munich as a teacher for organ and composition. He moved in 1907 to Leipzig to become the music director of the university until 1908 and professor of composition at the conservatory until his early death in 1916. Personal details

Diese Simplizität und die vom Carus-Verlag höchst professionell umgesetzten Druckbände machen die Ausgabe zu einem wahren Kleinod, das man gern zur Hand nimmt.

Hier liegt nun endlich die denkbar verlässlichste Ausgabe Regerscher Orgelwerke vor; der Notenteil ist von so mustergültiger und ästhetisch ansprechender Aufmachung, dass man als Organist zögert, in üblicher Manier mit (oft untilgbaren) Notizen, Fingersätzen und Registernummern darüber herzufallen. Das Vorwort bringt den Interessierten auf den neuesten Stand der Forschung (Schande über die Tastenlöwen, die gleich zuschlagen, ohne diese wertvollen Informationen gelesen zu haben!), dank der „Hybrid-Edition” erlaubt die beiliegende DVD, tief in die Entstehungsgeschichte der Werke einzudringen -eine spannende Lektüre! Und noch einmal: Hochachtung für die Musikwissenschaftler im Reger-Institut, die das alles erkundet, aufbereitet und auf der CD (Edirom) präsentiert haben.

These days, when Reger's works are available for free online, one might legitimately wonder whether it is worth spending money on a new edition. Certainly anyone who teaches at a university or who performs a large amount of German Romantic music will want to purchase some of these new editions, and I can highly recommend the individual publications given their reasonable price. It is wise to learn from the beginning on the best available edition since it is so difficult to change over to a new edition of a piece once learned. If one has the resources to purchase the hardbound volumes, the ability to compare sources via the DVD is fascinating. It is possible to view multiple sources side by side (including handwritten manuscripts), hide or show annotations from the Critical Report, zoom in or out, and search by keyword. Places where editorial decisions were necessary are listed by work and measure number; selecting one opens images of that bar from various sources for comparison. All of this information allows the performer to make informed choices.
