The setting of psalms inspired Mendelssohn throughout his compositional career, from the youthful version of Psalm 66 for double female chorus (1822) to the masterly setting of selected verses from Psalm 91 (“Denn er hat seinen Engeln befohlen”) for double chorus and orchestra in Elijah (1846). Between 1830 and 1843 Mendelssohn’s psalm composition culminated in a series of five major works, which required a variety of solo, choral, and orchestral forces. The first of these, Psalm 115, op. 31, appeared in 1835, and was followed in quick succession by Psalms 42, 95, 114, and 98. Rather like a hybrid of the Bachian cantata and Handelian oratorio, these psalm settings established a genre of sacred music that came to be highly prized during the nineteenth century (regrettably, today they remain among the least performed of Mendelssohn’s sacred music). Felix Mendelssohn Bartholdy: Der 95. Psalm op.46
Für die Aufführung dieser etwas eine halbe Stunde dauernden Komposition ist die übliche Oratorienbesetzung, wie sie in der Mitte des letzten Jahrhunderts üblich war, gefordert. Das Werk wird jedem großen Chor zur Ehre und Freude gereichen. Im Schaffen von Mendelssohn nehmen die Psalmvertonungen eine wichtige Stelle ein. Dabei ist der 95. Psalm mit seinen unterschiedlichen Aussagen für eine abwechslungsreiche Gestaltung besonders geeignet. Der Herausgeber R. Larry Todd beschreibt im Vorwort Wissenswertes zur Kompositionsgeschichte, und er beschreibt das Werk eingehend.

Die Beschäftigung mit Psalmen inspirierte Felix Mendelssohn Bartholdy während seines gesamten kompositorischen Schaffens. Zwischen den Jahren 1830 und 1843 entstand eine Serie von fünf größeren Werken, die vielfältige Solo-, Chor- und Orchesterbesetzungen fordern. Als Verbindung einer Bach-Kantate mit einem Oratorium Händels haben diese Psalm-Kompositionen eine Gattung religiöser Musik begründet, die während des 19. Jahrhunderts zu hoher Wertschätzung gelangte.
Der Text des Psalm 95 war für Mendelssohn eine Herausforderung: seine elf Verse gliedern sich in zwei ungleiche Teile von gegensätzlichem Charakter. Mendelssohn entschied sich, diesen textlichen Gegensatz in die tonartliche Anlage seiner Komposition aufzunehmen. Um ein emotionales Abfallen des Schlusses zu verhindern, änderte er die Reihenfolge der Verse.
Mendelssohn entfaltet in seiner Partitur eine reiche Palette von Ausdrucksmitteln. Das Stück ist sehr aussagestark und sei jedem empfohlen, der ein beeindruckendes Werk für ein geistliches Konzert sucht.
