Reinhard Keiser, highly regarded by his contemporaries as a composer (primarily of operas), also wrote a considerable number of sacred works, such as cantatas, masses, passions, and oratorios. Among these works, most of which are lost, this Dialogus von der Geburt Christi, published here for the first time, occupies a special place as Keiser’s only surviving Christmas oratorio. It is a an alternative to the current Christmas repertoire. Opulently scored, well-known Christmas chorales are presented, while in other movements the intimacy of the scene at the crib is evoked. The colorful and finely nuanced instrumentation is contrasted with freely flowing, easily singable choral movements.

Translation (abridged): John CoombsReinhard Keiser and his oratorios Reinhard Keiser and his oratorios Reinhard Keiser (1674 –1739), born at Teuchern near Halle, was the eldest son of Agnesa von Etzdorff, daughter of a landowner of the aristocracy, and the organist and composer Gottfried Keiser. Beginning in the year 1685 he was a pupil at the Thomasschule in Leipzig for seven years (during the tenure of the choirmaster J. Schelle and the organist J. Kuhnau), where he acquired profound knowledge of the current church music repertoire. After three years as Cammer-Componist at the Court of Brunswick (from 1692) he moved to the Gänsemarkt Opera in Hamburg. For that foremost German-speaking opera house Keiser provided more than 60 operas of his own, and he attracted promising musicians and composers to Hamburg – including Handel, Graupner and Hasse. Reinhard Keiser und seine Oratorien Reinhard Keiser und seine Oratorien 1674 wurde Reinhard Keiser in Teuchern im Herzogtum Sachsen-Weißenfels als erster von zwei Söhnen aus der Verbindung der Junkerstochter Agnesa von Etzdorff mit dem vorübergehend ortsansässigen Organisten Gottfried Keiser geboren. Der Vater hielt sich vermutlich bereits wenig später im norddeutschen Raum auf. Jedenfalls weiß Johann Mattheson 1739 zu berichten, dass Gottfried Keiser ein guter Komponist gewesen sei und wer Werke von ihm besaß. Diese scheinen heute fast alle verschollen zu sein. 1685 wurde der Sohn Reinhard dann, wie viele angehende Musiker seiner Zeit, an der Leipziger Thomasschule aufgenommen, wo ihm in den folgenden sieben Jahren das kompositorische Rüstzeug durch Kantor Johann Schelle (und Organist Johann Kuhnau?) vermittelt wurde, so dass er sicher zu profunder
