Se mai più sarò geloso
from: Cleofide (Opera seria) 1731
The opera Cleofide by Johann Adolf Hasse was part of an ambitious plan to revive the art of Italian opera at the Saxon court. The dramatic plot – about Alexander the Great’s conquests in India – is brought to life by Hasse’s brilliant setting.
The duet “Se mai più sarò geloso” is a dramatic encounter that illuminates the conflict between the characters Cleofide and Poro. Both question the sincerity of the other’s feelings and, in their suffering, desperately wish to be understood.
