He [Bredenbach] knows what children are capable of … The piece is fun: first, because the story is well-known; second, because the melodies are original and witty (children have an excellent sense for why the melody must be angular in certain places, and why an exploding pipe cannot be set in decending major thirds), third, because hymns, folksongs, and children’s songs are hidden everywhere, which strengthen and underline the comedy or joke in each situation …

[ ] Wer Bredenbachs Lustige Lieder kennt, weiß, dass seine Musik nicht immer leicht ist, was im übrigen ja auch nicht immer sein muss! Er weiß, was Kindern zuzutrauen ist [ ] Das Stück macht Spaß: erstens, weil die Geschichte bekannt ist, zweitens, weil die Melodien originell und witzig sind, weil Kinder ein genaues Gespür dafür haben, warum bestimmte Stellen schräg sein müssen und eine explodierende Pfeife nicht in fallendem Dur-Dreiklang vertont werden kann, drittens, weil in Bredenbachs Komposition immer wieder Kirchen-, Volks- und Kinderlieder versteckt sind, welche die Komik oder den Witz der jeweiligen Situation verstärken und unterstreichen
