Additional product information
  • Johannes Brahms' study of musical tradition was of crucial importance to his output: he combined church modes, canonic technique, Baroque style and diction, Bach's counterpoint and Beethoven's thematic-motivic work with the harmonic and expressive achievements of Romanticism to form his own distinctive style. In this respect his choral songs and vocal quartets (e.g. the “Liebeslieder Waltzes” and “New Liebeslieder Waltzes”), often to folk song texts, in which a musical microcosm unfolds, are examplary. His “Deutsches Requiem”, available from Carus in several different versions, constitutes one of the most fascinating confessions of faith in the history of music. Personal details
  • Ludwig Böhme loves vocal music, whether it is as a singer, conductor, teacher or arranger. Born in 1979 in Rodewisch/Vogtland, Saxony, he was a member of St. Thomas’s Choir, Leipzig from 1989–98. Fol - lowing his time as a chorister he was assistant to the Kantor of St. Thomas’s until 2002. He studied at the Hochschule für Musik und Theater “Felix Mendelssohn Bartholdy” in Leipzig. After graduating with distinction, he undertook postgraduate studies culminating in a graduate recital. His teachers included Georg Christoph Biller and Horst Neumann; courses with the King’s Singers, Ton Koopman, and Morten Schuldt-Jensen provided further inspiration. Ludwig Böhme is a founder member and baritone of the Calmus Ensemble Leipzig, one of Germany’s leading vocal ensembles. Calmus performs about 70 concerts a year worldwide and has its own music publishing label. Over the last ten years the group has won the most important international competitions and most recently received a 2009 “ECHO-Klassik” award in the “Klassik ohne Grenzen” category for its CD “Lied:gut!”. Ludwig Böhme has conducted the Kammerchor Josquin des Préz since 2002, and in 2004 inaugurated the concert series “Josquin – Das Projekt” as its artistic director. Concerts have taken him to many of the major music festivals in Germany (including the Schleswig-Holstein Musik Festival, MDR Musiksommer, Dresden Music Festival, Kultursommer Rheinland-Pfalz, and Bach Festival Leipzig), to many European countries, Chile, and the USA. CD, radio and television productions illus - trate his artistic work. Ludwig Böhme directs courses for choirs and vocal ensembles and since 2007, has taught conducting at the Evangelische Hochschule für Kirchenmusik in Halle/Saale, Saxony-Anhalt.
