Heart and mouth and thought and action
Cantata for the Feast of the Visitation of the Virgin Mary BWV 147, 1723
Johann Sebastian Bach’s cantata Herz und Mund und Tat und Leben BWV 147 originates from his Weimar period. But seven years after its composition, he adapted and extended it for performance in Leipzig. It is one of Bach’s most popular cantatas, and not only because of the catchy chorale setting (“Jesus bleibet meine Freude” / “Jesu, Joy of Man’s Desiring”).
