où le soleil errait parmi des vapeurs blanches,

par cet après-midi de baisers sous les branches.

Branches mortes qu’aucun souffle ne remuait,
branches noires avec quelque feuille fanée,

plus tendrement encor dans ce grand bois muet,
et dans cette langueur de la mort de l’année !

an dem die Sonne inmitten weißer Dämpfe
umherwanderte,
glich dem zarten, tiefen Gefühl,
das uns wehmütig glücklich machte
an diesen Nachmittag der Küsse unter den Zweigen.

Tote Zweige, die kein Hauch berührte,
schwarze Zweige mit etwas welkem Laub,
ach, dass sich dein Mund dem meinen gegeben hat,
viel zärtlicher noch in diesem großen, stummen Gehölz
und in dieser Mattigkeit des verscheidenden Jahres.
